My friends like - just north of Malibu and LA. You will learn faster with lessons, but if you have good balance and are in some kind of shape, I suggest you rent a board for a few hours to see if you really need lessons.
Recommend Huntington Beach in Orange County.

Yes, Huntington Beach is a great spot as is Ventura--and also near Zuma or Malibu--but stay away from Newport Beach or Palos Verdes. They both have very challenging surfing spots. Huntington is probably the easiest place if you plan to pay someone to teach you. Some of the other places are not so well organized for classes. Be aware that the size of the surf will vary greatly depending upon where you go--and upon the weather conditions. At Huntington you can get anything from no waves to normal 4-5 footers to 10-12 footers on a big break day.
A sideline note: Mavericks in northern California (located at Half Moon Bay)--normally gets giant waves (40-50 footers--largest in the world) when conditions are right--but they are no longer setting up seating for visitors during their contest after last year's debacle when waves came on-shore and wiped out the bleachers they had set up. Probably doesn't matter this year--weather has been mild and they probably won't even hold a competition anytime this winter.
