I myself living in Vietnam. I strongly recommend you to go with the guide book Lonely Planet if you plan to travel Vietnam for some reasons below:
1. The author seems to understand deeply about Vietnam culture, nature and people.
2. All the information is quite updated and exactly with no mistakes.
And if you want to have a travel expert, you have me.

I find the information over on considerably more up-to-date than any publication. Lonely Planet might be well written, but when it comes to lodging recommendations and pricing, it's entirely out of date and misleading at best. Vietnam has evolved considerably even in the last two or three years, and anyone depending on either LP or RG would be left out in the tropical heat!
