The public transportation in L.A. isn't the greatest so if you want to see Hollywood-type stuff you should stay right in Hollywood. Google the LA Metro to research this. Probably more expensive to stay in Hollywood but you can't rent a car at your age. I did notice a metro train between Hollywood and some of the nearby areas, like Universal Studios which has a fun amusement park/studio tour. A little pricey but worth an entire day if you like movies. If you are more into a studio tour to learn how movies are made than fun rides, I think the Warner Brothers studio tour is better and much less expensive. Have fun!
@Travel_411 - Nothing is certain yet, those are just some places I have earmarked as potential places to go travelling for 6 months / 12 months, but it is still in the planning stages, I don't know if I have enough funds yet.

@Laurim - Thanks for the advice, I am not a roller coaster kinda guy, so the tours sound much more interesting.

That's too bad. I think I would visit New York before I would do LA. There's a lot more significant sights to see and they can all be accessed by a combo of walking, subway and taxis. Although in February it's a little chilly for walking.
Last time I was in Mexico, I stayed in Cancun and did a combo of zip lining through the jungle and then taking a segway to something called a cenote to do some swimming. A cenote is basically a cave whose roof has collapsed and becomes a large pool of ground water and rain water or sometimes there's a connection to the ocean so it's a combo of fresh and salt water. Very fun day and not that expensive!.

I have many friends who have been to Cancun a couple of times (for spring break) and they have thoroughly enjoyed it. Whereas this is good with a group of your best mates, I don't want to be partying constantly. What is Cancun like all year around? as I have only heard about it during Spring break.
That cenote idea sounds great, where about was that in Cancun?
I leave in 9 weeks on a RTW trip which is very similar to yours and will take about 11 months.
I fly from England to Moscow and get on the Trans Siberian. The train journey cost me £1375 and the RTW flights cost me £2200. I am going from Moscow to Beijing over 2 weeks, then going to Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore, All of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and L.A. So a very similar route to the one you are looking at. I'm budgeting £1100 per month while I am away, and have got a WHV for Australia so hopefully can boost the funds up. All in all I think this trip will cost about £14-5k.
I plan to be staying in hostels and possibly buying a car for the east coast of australia. Obviously i haven't been on the trip yet so can't advise you on places to see and things to do, but i hope this gives you some idea on the cost of it all. Don't forget visa's cost about £400-500, vaccinations £150, travel insurance £150 etc.

I went at the end of June so the weather was great. Many people go in the winter so I assume that's nice as well. I did the Selvatica zip line/cenote thing as a package tour I purchased inside my hotel. A bus picked me up at the hotel and took me to the zip line company. You can find an example of this tour by Googling "Selvatica canopy zip line tour". They cost about US$85-US$95. On my tour 4 yrs ago, riding a segway to the cenote instead of with the group in the army truck was an extra US$20. Goes through the Selvatica reserve in the Mayan jungle. The cenote on this tour was for swimming and they had a rope strung across with a T-bar you grabbed onto from the edge, pushed off and let go midway over the water. Scary as hell for me because it was probably 20 ft up but I did try it. Other cenotes on other tours are known for being good for snorkeling and diving, if that's your thing.
Another tour you can take from Cancun is the Mayan temple in Tulum. I've never done it but I hear it's pretty interesting. I was more interested in going to party at Coco Bongos, lol.
@Choco_bear - Wow, that sounds very familiar to my plan of action haha, you will definitely need to stay in touch and let me know how you get on, what places and activities you got up to.
I am wondering how much money will be needed to complete all of the above, at the moment I have £6,500 but I have saving time till next year when I am looking at going travelling.
@Rebel.fone - There is nothing wrong with Europe, intact I still want to go through Europe but at this moment in time a RTW trip appeals to me more.
There are plenty of places in the UK I haven't been too, so theoretically I should travel through the UK first, but a RTW travel sounds much more appealing.
@Laurim - Wow, that sounds amazing and something that is definitely of interest to me. I didn't have any specific area in Mexico I wanted to go to, but Cancun definitely seems like a stop off at some point.
