There's not the huge choice like the UK and therefore it's really expensive and not much difference between the services. I found Optus to be about the best, but I also HATE vodafone who hold everyone to ransom and fix the prices.
It's hard to say what the best network is, generally has the best network coverage but is probably one of the more expensive carriers. Otherwise you could try and even have a pre-paid mobile service now. As Dodger said has a very bad reputation because of their service.
I recommend - they use the Optus network but their prices are better, you get free voicemail, and usually heaps of included calls/texts.
I have been with them for years and have no complaints.
