Please help with schengen visa duration

laxani has indicated that this thread is about Belgium

Sorry, but do I understand it correctly?
You are living in the UK (United-Kingdom) right?
The UK is part of europe and so you are free to travel around in europe (schengen countrys), so you don't need any visa (correct me if I am wrong).
I live in Belgium and I don't need any visa for UK and a cousin of my who lives in the UK don't need any visa to visit us.

If you do need a visa, than your visa will be controled at the fist point, most likly the airport, you enter a schengen country (posible but not likly the cops on the streets will also ask for your visa to). When you enter one schengen country (your case it is Belgium, Brussels) then you are free to travel around in all schengen country's, you almost never have a border control (Andorra is an exeption). You are always posible to leave a schengen country before your visa expires, but after it expires, you will have a big problem. NEVER try to BRIBE a cop or any one else.

I hope this is the answer you were expecting

You are wrong, as you're assuming that "living in the UK" is the same as having UK citizenship. laxani doesn't specify where he/she is from, but "HSMP (Tier 1)" means being in the UK on the highest level of the "Highly Skilled Migrant Programme", thus not being a citizen there, and so also needing a Schengen visa.

Unfortunately I'm no expert on Schengen Visa rules and consequences of overstaying. You'll need to wait for other members with more knowledge to look in for an answer there. I do know that there's random passport checks on international trains, and that they seem to be more prevalent during the summer months, so you could be found out to be overstaying even before departing.

In your particular case (foreign migrant), I wouldn't risk overstaying as this may harm your position in the HSMP. Chances of getting caught are high.

I'd turn to the Belgian consulate and ask why they gave you a visa that doesn't cover your travel plans. If they have no good reason - it might be a simple mistake - they might correct it for you.

Thanks everybody for your reply. Could you please let me know if during entry to Belgium ( at the airport) we can possibly change the visa? What is the best way of contacting the visa officer?
I think it is a mistake cos my wife/daugther are joining me later and they got 10 days too.
Thanks

Making an educated guess: You cannot change the visa at the border. You have to contact the consulate or embassy who issued the visa.
