I will be travelling by train from Darjeeling to Patna to Varanasi. I want to then go up to Katmandhu by train as far as possible and then switch to a Nepal bus or train (does Nepal even have trains?). I will fly back to Delhi from Katmandhu.
sir yu can have a train from varanasi to gorakhpur.. since no train service is direct from varansi to nepal...... from gorakhpur yu have to travel to nepal border ( sonauli)........after crossing the border yu can either take a bus( a cheaper option and gives yu breath taking views ) or a taxi direct to kathmandu or take a flight from bhairahwan...... alternatively yu can have a direct taxi from gorakhpur which shall be a bit costly.......
all the best

If i remember right, its far easier to take a bus from Varinasi to Kathmandu. If you take the train it means more rickshaws to and from train stations to bus station. With the public bus you change at the border then straight to Kathmandu. There are also private bus companys running from Varinasi to Kathmandu. 2 years ago when I went there was debate as to how ligit the companys were that ran to Kathmandu as some had been ripped off by being dumped at the border or loaded onto the public bus after paying higher amount believing they were getting a private bus. i think Pauls bus was one of the private companys. Check your guest house when you get to Varinasi, they are sure to have up to date info.
I took a bus from Varanasi to the border of Nepal, this took about six to eight hours (i forget the exact length as it was two years ago), I then spent the night in the small border town before continuing on to kathmandu on another bus the next morning. It was simple and relatively quick by Indian and Nepal standards.
Hi I caught a bus from Varanasi to the border (Sunauli) and then spent the night there. The food and accommodation was pretty awful on the border and you just have to deal with it as there is not much choice. My friends got food poisoning in Sunauli which made the final leg of the journey even harder ....and then you take another bus to Kathmandu. It was a long and uncomfortable journey and so I would definitely recommend flying from Varanasi back to Delhi and then flying up to Kathmandu or taking the sleeper train to Delhi from Varanasi and then flying up to Kathmandu. Unless you are on a really tight budget - don't do it

You're right Sunauli is a bit of a hell hole, but if you catch the first bus out of Varinasi at 7.00am it gets you to the border to get through Immigration and catch the bus in Nepal for Kathmandu arriving in the am.
