Hello I will be flying into Brisbane on July 29 and take a train from there to Cairns. Im not sure what train to catch though. I am on a very strict budget so I want to find a good price. I would like to see as much wildlife as possible on my trek and also do some camping. Are there any good areas around Cairns to camp?
Catching a train from Brisbane to Cairns is a bit unusual, you might be better off catching a bus. Will you be camping in a tent? You might be able to get an unpowered camp site in a caravan park in the Cairns area. The cheapest one I found was at Mt Carbine which is a fair way from Cairns and was $17 a night for a powered site. As a bit of an adventure you could camp on Fitzroy Island, the actual camping costs probably aren't huge but the ride over is probably fairly expensive.
You could also try Camping at Noah Beach in the Dantree National Park and there is a camping area in the National Park up near Atherton.
