I love travelling by train, its so much more relaxing then by bus!!
Hi ... Just to let you know that bus travel through Asia is so simply, I spent nearly 5 months travelling and took buses pretty much all the time. I never prebooked, just turned up at the bus station and waited for the next bus. They are cheap and easy. Although if you plan to cross a border by bus it might be worth buying your ticket a day or two before you want to leave.
Night buses are even better because obviously you are travelling while you sleep. I never felt unsafe on a bus, although just to make sure I always wrapped my bag strap around my leg.
