£250 P/Week??

Hey,
A little help needed
I'm going to S.E Asia next year
I'm looking to spend about
3-5 Days in Beijing - China
3-5 Days in Shanghai - China
2-3 Days in Hong Kong - China
5-7 Days in Hanoi - Vietnam
2-3 Days in Chaing Mai (Thailand)
5-7 Days in Bangkok & River Kwai (Thailand)
10-14 Days in Southen Thailand (Including Full Moon Party)
2-3 Days in Kuala Lumpar - Malaysia
2-3 Days in Singapore
I'm travelling overland bus/train the whole way, staying in hostels, was thinking overnight trains would kill two birds with one stone aswell, is a budget of £250 p/week including a bed, food & train travel comfortably do-able while seeing a fair amount too? (Flights already paid for)
Any advice would be helpful..

Sarah,
I think in USD, but your 250GBP/week should be more than enough. I figure $50/day(34GBP) while in SEA. Some days you will easily stay under that amount, esp. when staying in the same city for several days. No big transport costs, lower food costs as you know where to eat, etc. My covers what I call 'eating street'. This can save you serious baht over a months time. Give it a try when possible. Overnight buses when possible. BKK-Chiang Mai, BKK-Surat Thani. Bus is usually cheaper than the train on many routes. Check.

Your days in HK & SIN may put you over your daily budget but it should average out over a months time. Good luck with your planning.

I thought it would be enough for food & bed, but I wasn't sure if it would be enough to get me from a-b! Is it easy to find your way around, like using buses etc?? I've looked on seat 61 but that's more trains I'm so scared about going it alone!! Ohh and ill check out your blog too thanks foryour help

Sarah,
There are so many BPers bumping around SEA that you will meet up with someone. It is very easy in Thailand & VN, not sure about China. Stay at hostels when possible and chat with your fellow travellers. Some have already been on the buses or trains that you will travel on next. I also suggest you be flexible on 'where next'. That way you will likely have someone to travel with for a few segments of you holiday. Hopefully another TP member will be over there for at least some of your route and contact you. It is certainly more fun to have another along to share the experience.

Take a notebook with you. I use mine as a daily diary plus names, email addresses of those I met along the way. Also write down suggestions on where to stay, eat, what to see/do, what bus to take, what to avoid, etc. When your adventure is over it will be one of the most valuable items in your bag.

Good luck with your planning.

£250/week will be enough, no worry. I've travelled extensively throughout SEA, and we managed to do that on less than €750 (£620) a month, for two persons. This included everything: food & drinks, lodging (most of the time with a private bathroom), transport, entry fees,...

On the other hand, your schedule seems rather tight to me (especially if you're travelling overland), but you probably will have you own reasons to rush through Vietnam and Malaysia...

Enjoy your trip!
Yves

The problem will be the expensive places (Beijing, HK, Singapore, Malaysia), but I believe you can do it if you balance it out in the cheaper cities. Can you bring a cr card as backup?

Hope you like noodles?
