I will soon be travelling around South East Asia, where I will be wanting to do some trekking. Nothing major, no 7-day treks or anything, but some jungle treks, and probably if we head over to Kota Kinabalu, then a little bit of mountain trekking.
I think its a fact, that everyone has different preferences when it comes to footwear, because we all have different feet. Personally, I use a light trainer with a high back. This doubles up as footwear for both local stroliing and long distance walking.
I'll PM you my favourite brand.
I would go with trainers all the way unless you know you have incredibly weak ankles.. I hiked the Annapurna Circuit in Nepal in Merell Radius trainers. They are awesome!!!!! Great for everything. They were great in the cold with some thick wool socks in -10F temps. Generally there is no reason to lug the weight of boot. Also, in my opinion I would avoid anything waterproof unless you are hiking somwhere in the rainy season.
With non waterproof boots your foot will breath easier and be more comfortable and help avoid blisters. No matter what you choose, when you take a lunch break or long rest, take off your boots/trainers and put them in the sun to dry, as well as your socks. May be annoying but your feet will love you for it. Just as important as your footwear is the socks. Dont just by the cheapest ones and absolutly do not put anything on your feet made of cotton!!!
boreal2673,i think you have just made up my mind for me,i was going to take my boots but i want to do plenty of walking,but think ill buy some walking trainers,i have some timberland ones,but personally i dont no any decent makes of walking shoes so should i go with them or i buying the name instead of the quality,nice tip about the waterproof ones though,thanks

I walked for 17 hours up cliff paths etc with just my Nike gym trainers, nothing fancy or special about them, all i bought was some 1000 mile walking socks, stuck a bit of talc in my socks every couple of hours! and not one blister!
Trainers all the way, so much lighter and comfier and if you prep ur feet beforehand and wear good socks your sorted!
