Broken Hill is at least 10 hours drive from Sydney. Easy drive after Bathurst. Watch out for kangaroos particularly at dusk & dawn. Look into some of the following;
Warrumbungles NP - Coonabarabran
Menindee Lakes - South of Broken Hill
Mutawintji NP - North of Broken Hill
Mt Kaputar NP - Narrabri
Moree - hot springs
Lightening Ridge - opals mining, underground living
If you're looking for things to do en route then Dubbo Zoo is a good stop. Paroo-Darling National Park near White Cliffs is also quite nice, when you're in Broken Hill it's worth checking out the sculptures at sunset.
Joffre is right, the Menindee Lakes are pretty as is Mungo National Park and the walls of China. You could make it into a round trip heading out through Dubbo, Nyngan, Cobar then Broken Hill and coming back via Menindee, Mildura, Hay and Wagga Wagga. There are some interesting sights along the Murray River you might be able to look at.
Narrabri, Lightning Ridge, the Warrumbungles and Moree might be a bit out of the way for a weekend trip so unless you can extend it you might give them a miss.
Hi guys,
Many thanks for the suggestions. We had a fab time doing the whole round trip there and back via Hay and Dubbo, with the added bonus of seeing the Broken Hill area greener than it's been in years after some serious rain this year. Menindee lakes full and stretching out of view under a vast sunset was stunning. Yes, there was a lot more we wanted to see and didn't have time for but as it's not too distant from Sydney we'll be back to Broken Hill again some time soon.
Cheers for the advice
