Looking for unbiased reports about driving the Lake Superior Tour. Circling Lake Superior through Duluth MN, Thunder Bay ONT, Sault Ste. Marie, Upper Peninsula MI, Wisconsin, etc.
I can only comment about the Canadian side.
Thunder Bay has some really nice sights to see in the Provincial Parks. Go to ontarioparks.com and check out Kakabeka Falls, Sleeping Giant and Ouimet Canyon. You can camp in these parks but they will be booked up. You can go to the parks for the day though for a small fee. I am pretty sure if you pay the day fee for one you don't have to pay again if you visit another park on the same day.
In Sault Ste Marie you can take the Algoma Express train into the Agawa Canyon. It is world famous when the leaves change. The odd tree might change colour in August as it is way more northern. It is a nice day trip.
Would you consider going a little further to Sudbury? Sudbury is a really interesting place. They mined nickel here and there is all sorts of interactive sights to see about Geology, Earth Sciences etc. I am sure if you googled sudbury Tourism you could find some more info. The exhibits there are not make-shift. They are incredible.
As far as the road conditions go they are 100% fine. No problems at all. Just watch out for OPP (Ontario Provincial Police). There are some long stretches with no stops or towns and people tend to go faster and faster and the cops know exactly where those spots are.
Food is standard North American at the same prices. You will find out the chains as well as local stops. Hotels are also pretty standard. Typical roadside motels and your basic chain brands. There might be the odd B&B or Guesthouse but the area it is not known for them.
South side is very nice as it seams to be all white sandy beaches, too much to list but get a map and stay as close to the water as possible, like this =
We found the trip to Copper Harbor very nice,Towns like Munising.Marquette,Ashland were nice diversions
Thanks so much for the helpful information!
