Hi everyone, I'm off to New Zealand next month, and really need advice. I've been to Australia and feel the same way as I did before I left, nervous lol I know this will be one of the best experiences of my left but still nervous . I plan to land in Auckland, is that a good place to start? I know I need a tax no. but not sure where to get it? I've already got my working visa!

Sure. Lots of new arrivals in Auckland. Opinions about Auckland are frequently a bit divided; people seem to either really like it, or really dislike it. Me, I'm in the former category - I think Auckland's one of the best cities in New Zealand, where there's always something happening (great live music scene), the weather is decent to great, and there's lots and lots of work (though obviously I don't know what that's like at the moment).
Of course, you don't go to New Zealand for the cities; its nature is much more worth seeing, so do make a point of it to leave Auckland behind sooner rather than later and head for some national parks.
I know I need a tax no. but not sure where to get it? I've already got my working visa!
You can get an IRD number using . (Scanning over it, the procedure seems to have changed quite a bit from back when I did it, so I won't tell you more about it for risk of steering you wrong; it should be relatively easy and straightforward, though.) on the IRD website should be a good starting point for other tax related questions you might have.
Also jobs, when I was in Australia it was hard to get a job. I'm not looking for anything special, just work that pays. Also, when I've looked on google earth, it looks like the airport is a good distance from Auckland?
It's quite close to the outskirts of Auckland, but yeah, to get to the city center takes about 45 minutes by bus (take the airbus, which goes many times an hour and drops you off at one of several points in the city center, almost always close to whichever hostel you'll be staying at).
Finally, New Zealand is an absolutely amazing country. I personally loved it far in excess of Australia (which was great in itself already). Make certain to spend as much time as possible in and around the Southern Alps on the South Island, and have a wonderful time!

Thanks for your advice, I plan to do a bit of work before Christmas. I want to see Lake Tekapo, Milford Sound and tour the south. I'm from London, and do like cities but given what New Zealand has to offer I want to try and see as much as I can. When I was in Australia I stayed close to the cities, and I'm now kicking myself. But live and learn!
Thanks for the form, I'll fill it in before I go. Whats the weather like in this time of year, I've heard NZ weather is much like the UK, unpredictable?
It's not of major importance, but in Australia they round up and down on sales, is it the same in New Zealand?
Actually I'd be quite interested in hearing people's views on this question too. I am heading back to NZ at the end of Nov/start of Dec. Then I plan to work for two months until my dad comes over and then spend around a month travelling culminating in a friends wedding in Clyde near Queenstown at the end of Feb.
I'm trying to ascertain where would be the best place to get work? I assume it has got to be Auckland, although as a city it is not somewhere I particularly like, but I guess if I had to, then I could put up with it for a couple of months if it meant I had a better chance of working?
Other than that I am considering Christchurch, which isn't the most exciting city, but I think I could get work there, and probably not spend too much money as there isn't a huge amount to do, or Wellington, which is a city I like, but I am not sure about the work situation there. I'm also considering Nelson or Queenstown (which would be my first choice, but I know it is so difficult to get jobs there).
Sander I agree that NZ is an amazing country - I can't wait to get back there!
