Open Plane Ticket?

I will be giving birth in January. I will be flying a close friend and midwife up to Maine from North Carolina to deliver the baby at my home. (My prenatal doctor is okay with the idea.) Obviously the baby does not run on a schedule, so how can I buy plane tickets? Is there any way to get open tickets? She may need to get here earlier or later, and who knows how long the baby will take!?! Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Even if you get an open plane ticket, there is no guarantee your friend will get a seat on the flight she needs.

Doesn't it get rather cold in Maine in January? Suppose the planes can't fly for a few days?

I don't really see how an open airline ticket would work? Is the idea just that you lock in the price? Because there's no way an airline is going to save a seat for you on all the flights in a certain time period.

If you want them there for the birth, the best you can do is book them to fly over close to the due date and hope the baby comes then. But there's clearly no way you can guarantee it will happen like that unless you plan on inducing (which I suspect you don't since it's a home birth). I don't really see how you can wait until the last minute to get them on a plane. I mean, what's the signal that it's happening? Your water breaking? It could all be over in a few hours if so. Or it could still take a couple of days. With our kids, the due date came and went and 2 weeks later we were still waiting. Impossible to know. Really, you are best having a midwife nearby available to you. Relying on your midwife to catch a plane, I feel you are pretty much setting yourself up for a hospital visit which I take it is the last thing you want.

Your friend could try to make it at the last minute, or just let her come by when the baby is born and let her help out for a few days at that point.

Just my 2 cents. And congratulations / good luck with the pregnancy!

Thanks for the info!

An open plane ticket would cost a fortune, are you wealthy? Next best thing would be a ticket on Southwest Airlines - they do not charge for schedule changes by you. From what city to what city???

You could always charter a private plane, but many people refuse to fly on them (me included).

since u know babies don't run on schedule, should u still be getting a midwife from someplace far away? haha. i am not experienced with babies and pregnancies, but i'm quite baffled with this plan, cos what's gonna happen if ur baby decides to come early? or do u plan to induce early, whenever she arrives? lol. nevertheless, good luck!
