Travelling to Thailand for 8 weeks and have no plans of where I want to go.
Good choices. I recommend all of them!
Sukhothai and Ayyuthaya are excellent for temples and sight-seeing. We rented bikes and just hit the roads when we were there.
Kanchanaburi - for historical sites, there's the infamous bridge over the river Kwai. Also, the national park is fantastic, not to mention the Tiger Temple!
Ao Nang - terrific beaches. Kayaking and rock climbing opportunities are abundant.
Also I would definately reccommend Railay beach in Krabi, from there you can get the boat to Phi Phi too. It's a really chilled out place with a nice beach!
Thank you both for your advice, will certainly be pin pointing these places on my map!!
the infamous bridge, is that the 'death bridge' or something like that? im really interested in seeing that!
I'd also recommend visiting Khao Sok national park while you are in Phuket - you can easily arrange a day trip, although I wished I'd stayed longer as it was stunning!

It was built by Allied POWs in WW2 during the building of a railway from Thailand to Burma. The railway is sometimes referred to as the "Death Railway" due to the number of prisoners who died during construction. The movie "The Bridge over the River Kwai" is a fictional account of the building of the bridge - something interesting to watch for context.
