traveling Africa?!?

hello there thinking of traveling africa near end of year, maybe kenya and south africa, has any 1 been or done something similar??

"... how safe is it??..."

===========================

Impossible question to answer. It's like many other places in the world... some parts are very safe and some parts are very dangerous - and these two extremes may be within spitting distance of each other.

That said, both countries are very popular destinations, they're certainly not off the beaten path so they're very easy to research.

Have fun.

Cheers,
Terry

I went to South Africa last year and loved it - it's a beautiful country and I felt perfectly safe, even as a female travelling alone. I spent 5 days in Cape Town and the surrounding area and then spent 5 days travelling the garden route which was absolutely fantastic.

I spent 5 months in Africa. You need to keep your wits about you and both countries have areas that you would do well to avoid (I was mugged at knifepoint in Durban, South Africa for instance). Taken as a whole, however, I would not say that either Kenya or South Africa are exceptionally dangerous.

The biggest issue you'll face is being overcharged for things. The assumption is that all white people are rich, so they will try to avoid giving you change for purchases or they will jack up the price on you. It's frustrating and not always possible to avoid. An unfortunate downside of travel in Africa. There's a reason that Nairobi is nicknamed Nairobbery on the backpacker circuit.

For South Africa, I spent 6 weeks there and I used a company called Baz Bus for my transport. They travel along the garden route and deliver you door-to-door from your current hostel to your next one. You still book your own accommodation and set your own travel dates - they just provide safe travel. South Africa has some of the best backpacker's hostels you will find anywhere in the world. It's a beautiful country and well worth the visit.

I felt Kenya quite safe. You can easily take public transportation (buses) everywhere. Even walking downtown Nairobi or up the hills was safe. Take car of your belongings and try not to get out after dark.
