I'm thinking of a trip to the Grand Canyon in early Feb next year but am not sure if this a bad time to go. Is the weather likely to affect my plans at all? How often are roads and/or the South rim closed at this time of year and what is visibility generally like?
The South Rim is open at that time, but there are possiblities of road closures due to bad weather. How often and when are impossible to predict, but the closings usually do not last very long. Elevations along the South Rim are app. 7000 ft./2100 m. So it does get very cold, and there is snow and ice. The weather can be quite moody. There is winter fog that comes and goes at will, plus the ocassional storm. Even so, if you are there for more than a day, the weather usually clears for some spectacular viewing at some point. If you plan on staying at the rim, you need to make reservations, even in winter. Although the park is not crowded in the winter months, the places to stay at the rim tend to be full year around.
Becky,
It snowed 3 days before we got to the GC in mid Jan. and the roads were clear. Snow in the shadows, all melted when getting direct sun. Best time to go IMO. recounts our day at the GC in Jan.
