I'm heading to Oaxaca soon and wondering if anyone has tips on where I can find information on local arts events such as art exhibitions, live music, theatre etc.
The Oaxaca page on the Visit Mexico site seems to be down at the moment but they have a handy calendar of events across the country: http://www.visitmexico.com/en/calendar
Since there has been a lot of discussion on here lately about crime in Mexico, let me ease your mind a bit by linking to a map put out by "The Economist" which shows crime by Mexican state,
http://www.economist.com/blogs/graphicdetail/2012/11/comparing-mexican-states-equivalent-countries
As you can see if you go to this map, crime is fairly low in Oaxaca (the Mexican state that is marked as Italy on the map I posted). However, as the map shows you shouldn't travel west to the state of Guerero (and the city of Acapulco) if you want to avoid one of the crime hotspots of Mexico. As the article also indicates, avoiding the state of Chihuahua is a must. P.S. to understand the map better, click on the "murder rate" tab at the top of the chart, Then it will show that Oaxaca has the same rate as Gabon--about 13.8 per 100,000 residents.
Enjoy Oaxaca. It is known as the culinary capital of Mexico--and some of Mexico's fabulous artists also come from the region.

Thanks for the info.
I'm not worried at all about crime in Oaxaca - obviously it's a problem in some parts of Mexico but from all accounts there's no need to be concerned in Oaxaca.
I posted on a few other forums and came across a website with events listings if anyone else is interested. It's www.quepasaoaxaca.com.
Happy travels!
