The first mistake that many UKer's make when considering a trip though the US (or Canada) is underestimating the sheer size and distances involved.
The US is over 40 times bigger than the UK so you have to give some sense of your budget, time allotted, interests, etc. before anyone can offer any meaningful advice. The logistical/budgetary differences alone between public transport and a rental car covering those distances is a huge consideration.
