There are no requirements on this; only that you have access to that amount of money. So it being in your bank account at home is perfectly fine.
(Additionally, they don't actually check up on the financial requirement ever, as far as anyone who has ever reported about it here on this forum has said. The requirement is there just for your protection, as AUD $5000 is about the minimum the average backpacker ends up needing.)
Really, customs are looking for young people with an ordinary visa and not too much money, who obviously plan to do some illegal work to pay for their long stay in Australia. They are often put on the first plane out again.
