Hi, I'm off to India (followed by SE Asia and Australia) in just under three weeks but I still need to buy myself a camera (or ask Father Christmas for one!).
Honestly, it doesn't really matter. At that price point there is very little difference between the major brands of Point & Shoot cameras... they all take perfectly acceptable photos in decent light... just buy whatever is on sale...

For travel snaps (as opposed to serious photography) I'd say there's no point carrying a separate device these days - smartphone cameras are great. And less extra clutter to carry and charge.
For the kind of money Clare wants to spend - and the fact that she's not a photographer - I agree... a new smartphone could easily fit the bill... with some basic instruction off the internet and a little practice it's amazing how good normal holiday snapshots can be...

I have a simple Panasonic Lumix digital which is great - the Lumix line has several models with different price levels. The thing I like about Panasonic is the ease of use. I formerly had a Sony digital which had a user's manual as thick as the bible, but the Panasonic manual is compact and easy to understand. Digital does not have to be complicated or expensive.
Thanks for the recommendations guys... annoyingly I did have a Samsung Galaxy which took quote good photos until recently but it broke and has been replaced with a crappy little pay as you go with no camera... As it happens the Canon IXUS (aka Canon 330 HS) is currently half price in Argos so I might go for that (built in touchscreen and wifi sounds a bit flash for me though!).
There are many in market you need to have one in your budget. If you buy the same in India it would cost a bit more while there it would be a little less.

Can anyone recommend a cheap (i.e. under £100), easy-to-use digital camera? As I said I'm not looking to create great art, just to have some decent-ish photos of my adventure!

The best TRAVEL camera, not necessarily the cheapest, is without a doubt, any camera with GPS capability. Your photo viewing application needs to have the ability to pick up the the location data. If it is, it's great fun to see it display a map with where your photos were taken. TP does this but unfortunately you cannot click on the map to display the photo. Some applications will do that. too
