You can buy a cheap Nokia cell phone in Thailand and use that around Asia. (Under $20.) Some US cell phones will not work in Asia. For that cheap cell phone buy sim cards for where you are. In Asia there are many cheap internet shops. Stop in and read and send emails for cheap money. Using roaming on smart phones can cost you some money!
Are you taking a laptop with you? Many cheap hotels have free wifi. For simple communication back home just use email. (No problem with free Yahoo, Hotmail or AOL/Aim.) Password protect any laptop. If you have to view bank statements do not save the password to those accounts. This is in case some guest you invite in your hotel room steals your computer. Why give them access to your money too!
For two months in Asia do some research on visas for each country. From New York round trip to Bangkok may be cheaper than one way to "somewhere" in Asia and one way back home from "somewhere else" in Asia. Just do the math. If you are concentrating on Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia and Thailand it is easy to travel overland or use cheap discount airlines. Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan will be more expensive than Laos, Cambodia and Thailand.
P.S. When you use a cheap internet for emails or printing itineraries or plane tickets - anything - clear your history! Most internet shops have some form of Internet Explorer. When you are finished go to internet options and clear passwords, history, etc. I use a flash drive with Firefox on it in internet shop computers. Matches my computer home page. Same saves, same toolbar line, etc. Just don't forget it in the rental computer! I am old and like working off a big screen instead of some teeny weeny cell phone screen.
