I'm travelling to south east Asia in a week and a nurse I bought my malaria tablets from said I must keep all medication in their boxes as at borders they will question the amount and may think I am drug smuggling, this sounds ridiculous to me! The boxes from my malaria tablets and paracetamol etc take up a lot of room!!! Does anyone know anything about this??

If you plan on just throwing these pills in a common baggie you may be in for an anal search when you get caught! Yes they may think you are a doper or drug smuggler! I think you are better to err on the side of caution than have to go through a whole bunch of crap! In this part of the world drug sellers are not treated too well.
Any drugs you bring with you keep in the original container. You should only take enough meds with you to see you through your time in Thailand. If any of your meds are on a restricted list - definitely in the original containers with the doctor's name and pharmacy clearly visible. Some travelers even bring a letter from their doctors if anything is a narcotic or some sort of dope. You should do a Google search on this too for some additional information.
If over the counter medicines, you can ask for smaller containers when you buy your aspirins, etc. How big is too big for your containers? I always have to travel with prescription meds and I have no problem storing them in my carry on bag. I do keep my meds in a big plastic food bag so it is easy to check them out going through security at airport.
Thailand has some pretty good pharmacies. No problem finding aspirin and other headache or stomach ache remedies.

I forgot to include this. If you are using connecting flights you do go through security and your bags are x-rayed. Some intermediate stops could be worse than Thailand. (Like Dubai or Middle East countries.)
