I am going to Hong Kong for 2 nights as a stop over and I have already paid for accommodation. I was wondering how much spending money you would suggest taking?
Accommodation aside, it is quite a cheap place to stay. How much you take depends on whether you want to buy anything in the shops or at the day or night markets. Or if you plan on doing anything special.
Well for six days there soon I'm taking £200, but I'm not a shopper. I'm figuring on meals and MRT being relatively cheap, and our other costs are activities - which could vary depending on the weather or mood or sstamina. I've budgeted for the medium but if we end up doing a Macau daytrip AND Disneyland I may end up sticking something on a debit card.
If you're just there for two nights, a lot of the main sights are cheap or free - the star ferry is pennies, the light show, the noonday gun are free, hike up the Peak is free or the tram up is still only HK$40 return - about £3.
If taking a ferry to Macau, go to the offices the afternoon before to book the ticket as on the day, ferries often run full up.
If you want to visit the peak, take a ferry across from Kowloon and where it stops on Hong Kong island, walk out but don't cross the road. Turn right and walk a little distance and you'll see a 15C bus stop which will take you right to the tram.
Note. There are two prices for the tram and some get the cheaper one, then have to pay extra for the observation area above. Getting two tickets like this is more expensive than getting one ticket originally.
I always kept plenty of small change on me for the MRT.
