Hi, so i'm an 18 year old english female. Will be 19 when i start with my travels.
New Zealand is a perfect country to travel to as a first time traveller. Absolutely awesome infrastructure; there's daily busses going everywhere you'd want to go, and very welcoming hostels in all those places, filled with fellow travellers who're more than happy to swap tales and advice. Also keep an eye on hostel's noticeboards for occasional rideshares.
September is pretty much low season in New Zealand, so no problem at all finding accommodation then. How long are you thinking of going for? Regardless of that, I'd spend about 60-70% of your time on the South Island, and the remainder on the North Island. There's just way more stunning scenery on the South Island. (Although the North definitely has its share of amazing sights.)
If you're staying many months, then be aware that high season lasts from christmas through the end of February, and that you should book hostels ahead at least a couple of days during this time - particularly on the South Island.
Hey,
Just thought I would send a quick reply. I'm off to New Zealand 26th August. I'm flying into Auckland. Got my flight pretty cheap. £545, one way, with emirates I've also just booked the kiwi experience as well. Whole kit and caboodle tour for £474. I'm planning on chilling in Auckland for a few weeks to get over the jet lag and then start the kiwi experience up until Wellington and find a job up until christmas. That's my only plan for the time being.
I'm also a first time traveller and I've never even caught a flight on my own. I'm sure you'll be fine. Keep me updated and if you end up coming out, send us a message
Jay
Best to buy a return flight as two single are hugely more expensive. Many also stop somewhere on the way out and back in Asia as it breaks up an incredibly long flight and gives you a chance to visit other places.
If you get a car in Auckland, lots of places you can visit in just days, but remember your driving licence. Auckland sprawls and it's interesting looking around the suburbs.
