THAILAND AT XMAS

I have decided to go to thailand at new year and christmas on my own..
Just wanted to know if anyone thought this was a good idea..
I don't want to end up out there on my own, stuck, with nothing to do.

Christmas day and New Year day are just ordinary days in Thailand with everything open. There are parties but some are quite expensive. Go to KSR and see what is happening. Sometimes there are Thai gigs for New Year's Eve outside the Central World store on Rathchaprarop. The only problem with this is that after midnight tuk-tuks and taxis all want to charge absolutely ridiculous prices to go anywhere. However, night buses still run.

where will you go? bangko?

Be nice to know if anyone else is deciding to do this as well??

Christmas and New Years holidays will have lots of tourists around. You have more tourists in Thailand between November and February when the weather is a little better. (Also the weather in the northern areas of Europe and America is cold. Some tourists seek out warm destinations.) However, this is also the most expensive time of the year for hotels with some places booked many months ahead of time. From some countries the cost of plane tickets are also at higher prices.

I don't think you will have a problem meeting other tourists during this time. Tourists visit every month of the year, hot season, rainy season and now it looks like the "protest season" too! For low season hotels are cheaper and for some months the flights can be cheaper too. I kind of like the rainy season when all of the plant life looks alive and green.

I don't know what you are expecting for Christmas. If you are looking for a Christian religious experience the Philippines is a better choice. Malls in Bangkok have decorations and some play Christmas music but mostly business as usual. Bangkok does have a few churches that that may do something special for Christmas. If you are looking for nightlife that is always available. Expensive nightclubs also available. There are some pubs popular with expats who throw some parties. Your hotel may impose a "party surcharge" to your normal hotel charge. Google check will give you some information for Christmas - New Years activities in Bangkok too.

Thai Visa and Teak Door expat forums have some information on holiday festivities too. You have over 11 months figure things out, nothing to worry about right now.

You will meet other tourists just about anywhere. Easy for a guy to meet people in cheap beer bars and pubs. Tours you can get from Bangkok travel agencies. You do meet other tourists on tours. You may meet other people in hotels, hostels, on trains, buses and even flying over.

Up to you!
