As long as you apply (not through any third party), it should be processed within the day - though it could take up to a week during peak times.
And they've just gone live with the current incarnation of this website a couple of weeks ago, which might conceivably have some effect on processing times as well (?), so for people going soon, I'd recommend applying no later than about 3-4 weeks in advance, just to be on the safe side.
For you, since you're going well over a year away, it's more relevant that you have a year from the date on which the visa is issued to arrive in the country. (And the one year of the visa itself starts running when you enter the country.) So anywhere between March 2014 and January 2015 would be a good time to apply.

Yeah I second that, I applied for mine at about half ten am on the 17th of April, and literally by lunchtime it was approved. But it does say on the immi website that you should leave up to two weeks x
