Good afternoon all,
The first question I have is regarding visas, I have found an official looking website that looks like it could be government related where we can apply for them but without actually starting the application process it is difficult to find out the information I need.
Just to make certain, , which is where you should be applying for your visas. (Everywhere else is a third party.)
- How much is it to apply for one
Assuming you indeed mean the Working Holiday Visa which I linked to above, that page has a section "Cost" at the bottom, which lists the current price as GBP 265.00
- What sort of checks are carried out, and how are they carried out
No one really knows, but assuming you answer all the basic questions the way most people do (no criminal background or anything), they're all automated, and probably rather shallow, as almost everyone gets their WHV approved within a matter of minutes to hours.
- At what point do we need to prove how we will financially support ourselves and how to we prove that?
Never. It's theoretically possible you'd be asked for proof of funds when arriving at the airport, for which a recent bank statement would suffice, but no one who's ever reported about it here has ever been asked about this (myself included).
The eligibility requirement of AUD $5000 is there mostly to protect you, as money tends to go fast in Australia (that amount lasts barely two months for most backpackers trying to be frugal, and it's easy to blow through it in weeks if you're not careful), and the vast majority of backpackers end up needing at least that much.
Once we are there our plan is to stay in a local hostel and create a general plan of action. Any information on hostels local to the airport in Sydeny, or the surrounding area would be great.
Don't stay at the airport. There's a direct train connecting the airport to the inner city, which takes about 15 minutes, and - right around central station (literally other side of the street, or less). Regardless of what time you arrive and how jetlagged you'll be, it's still worth going into the city with that.
In general is my hostel of choice when in Sydney, as I've long ago fallen in love with the almost bohemian feel of the Glebe neighbourhood it's located in. The newest YHA in Sydney, , is also getting some great reviews. If you're not the YHA type and want more party-oriented hostels, I'm not really up on what's good for that, but check out some reviews on .
At the moment I am working in a restaurant as a cocktail barman, and my fiancee is involved in admin work as well as holding down another position as a barmaid. We are both going to aim for positions in Australia similar to what we have now although we are both open to learning and trying new things. I read somewhere that to participate in bar work in Australia we would both need to complete some form of course?
Yes, the "RSA" (Responsible Serving of Alcohol). I'm fuzzy on the details, so I'll leave the googling to you, but the most important thing about it is that it doesn't carry over from one state to the other, so know where you'll be looking for work before getting one.
Hey,
Thats awesome!
Thanks for the tips/advice
Grant
