Could you guys give me some advice for the best hotels in Bangkok?
For hotel help you should include a price range. A "good" hotel for many travelers is what they can afford. A Google search will give you a few of the best (and most expensive) hotels in Bangkok.
Where in Bangkok do you need this hotel? Bangkok is about the size of London.
Where will you cash in this card? Will it work overseas? If you have some sort of card that can only be used with specific hotels you can pull up that hotel website and see what is available. Maybe then you only have to worry about where in Bangkok you choose to sleep.
In Bangkok a hotel during high season starting around 800-1200 baht will have private toilet, TV and air conditioning. Young tourists, sometimes still in school or just out, often choose the Khao San Road area. (No rail service in that area.) Some tourists choose the Siam, Sukhumvit Nana or Asoke areas. Some tourists are only interested in shopping and choose Pratunam area. Some well to do tourists may choose the Riverside area.

How much do you want to spend on a good hotel? A really good hotel will run from around 3000 baht to 8000 baht a night.
Since you said "parents" in your post, a typical hotel for young visitors often runs from 400 baht for shared dorms to maybe 1000 baht if they are getting help from parents.
Assuming you are flying to Bangkok on a round trip plane ticket to save money. Flying or train or bus to get you close to Laos is cheap from Thailand. If flying home from Bangkok try to schedule a final night in that city and not fly in for the flight at the last minute. Flying from home to Bangkok with a one way ticket (and planing for the free Visa Exemption and do not have a Tourist Visa) could have problems if you do not have proof of onward travel. (Usually plane ticket out of Thailand for proof of onward travel.)
Check visa requirements.
Pick a hotel in the low number streets (soi's) on Sukhumvit, which will put you within easy reach of the BTS Skytrain and close by, the MRT subway. Taxis are metered and quite cheap in Bangkok but traffic there can be a nightmare.
booking.com, asiarooms, agoda and the like have a huge selection of hotels available but even with tourist numbers down in Thailand, next month is high season so many rooms will already be booked so book something very soon.
I like the - excellent in every way - all private room, well located and extremely friendly. They're both in the Old City very close to Khao San Road, but away from the noise. The Old City is between the river and Chinatown - a very convenient location/close to the Grand Palace and some of the best street food in Bangkok. They're called hostels because some rooms have to share a bath, but this is really a boutique hotel. The shared bath is clean enough to eat off the floor, by the way.
