Sleeping gear for hostels

Hey guys
I am leaving to backpack through Southeast Asia in a few weeks and was wondering what the deal is with the hostels over there. Do i need a sleeping bag and pillow or will they provide?

How much in your budget for hotels or hostels? Unless you plan to sleep on beaches or streets I don't think you will need a sleeping bag and pillow! Besides you can purchase them in Asia anyway. If you did plan on sleeping on beaches or streets then keep in mind that you could get in trouble with the law or get rolled! I would skip the sleeping bag and pillow!

Hostels and hotels are not that far apart in price. How low will you go for a roof over your head? Know how much you can afford to spend each night to sleep and then ask for suggestions for each area in that price range. If you choose the cheapest place to stay at but you have to pay for expensive transportation to get around have you really saved any money?

It is rare that you actually carry a bag for longer distances than from airport to taxi or bus station to taxi or maybe during your walk to your hotel. Most of the time your pack is in your room while you are walking around with a smaller bag. Make sure you are able to lock your bag. Many travelers even travel with duffel bags even suitcases on wheels!

My preference is a cheap hotel or guest house where I have my own room and my own toilet, but I am an "almost" old fart! Plan now on how to take care of finances and have money available. You don't want to walk around with $10,000 stuffed in your pockets do you?

Good luck.
