Our first nine weeks travelling (leaving 2nd March 2011) are in SE Asia, we're starting off in bangkok and planning on going to Laos, Vietnam, Singapore ect but would prefer to save a bit of money by couch surfing as this is what we're also doing in Australia
I have no experience in couch surfing, but I did look up couches in Thailand. There are females offering couches in most cities you might visit. That just makes more sense IMO. Good luck with your planning.
Bangkok is very cheap for accommodation anyway and Laos and Vietnam can be cheap but Singapore is expensive. I assume you know about:

As to safety, that is anybody's guess and I don't know that two men would be more or less safe that two women. There are some very odd people about, like the guy wearing a low cut top to show off his big pair of boobs, opposite me on the MRT in Bangkok the other day.

Have you set up a budget already and know how much you can afford for a hotel or a hostel bunk?
Bangkok is not like Tokyo or New York City where you have to pay $100 a night for a hotel.
What is you allowance for a hotel room?
As far as safety goes Thailand, and Bangkok in general, may be safer than your own big cities. But this doesn't mean that some hanky panky wouldn't go on if you were staying in a place with just guys around. This is especially a problem if you are dopers or drunks where anything could happen.
I would choose the area to stay at first because some cheap place in someone's apartment may sound nice until you have to pay for taxi rides to get everywhere or the place is in a dodgy area.
Nine weeks is a long time for a first trip to Asia and being teenagers too. Lots can happen because teenagers often use poor judgment and take chances. You two may be exceptions and are perfect little angels when out of sight of mommy and daddy. Only you two will know.
In some areas you may be able to find places that only women can stay at. Sometimes lonely women are hit upon by guys who help spend their money for various reasons. So be aware that over friendly men may be "friendly" because they want your money!
Maybe a shorter holiday will be better where you can use the money saved so you can stay in nicer places.
Singapore and Australia will be much more expensive than Thailand, Laos and Vietnam.
