Auckland is reasonably safe and there are a large number of international students so I'd say it would be a good place to study.
Living in akl, and being a member of the Akl University recreation centre, I get to meet a lot of international students. And for the most part they enjoy it. Culturally it's a bit of a mishmash, but that helps things along. But the big thing to consider is the Rugby World cup that will be in akl this year, the city will be absolutely buzzing... ok not great for studying focus, but while it's on Akl will be an utterly fantastic place!
