Hey,
Well Alex , the 1st step is that you actually want to break free and breathe new air . Now , what are your interests ? this may help determine the path . Take the bare minimum - in general you'll be able to purchase other needs as you go , and any items brought home become souvenirs . A small light pack is easier to keep up with . Keep id and most cash on you at all times , preferably in a sack attached to your pant loop and slid down by the groin- unless there's a safe for valuables of course . Most every one traveling through the Hostel network are ok folks - you'll meet the best people and that's a real highlight of travel . However , always be aware - too much relaxing w/new friends can make you wake up in the gutter w/o your possessions . Anyway , my opinions are directed towards 3rd world travel . Research all your potential escape sites extensively and wherever you go - always bargain for goods and services , even in th US it doesn't hurt to try for bargain . Good Luck , Happy Trails frm Colorado USA
