We want to travel from Unawatuna to Kandy on the 17th Jan 2011 and would prefer to use the train or bus as taxis are very expensive, can anyone help, thank you
Your best bet is to decide when you get here. Train and Bus travel may not be too comfortable but its certainly is cheaper. When you get to Sri Lanka you can see the condition of the public transport system and then decide. The system may be alot of things, but its cheap and the people are helpful and nice.

Bus to Colombo and a direct train from there. It's quite a scenic train ride. Fairly crowded so make sure you get a seat.
On the train were some youngsters touting guest houses in Kandy, run by their family. The one I stayed at was OK.
