hey jenny, im going for a year in sept 2011- this is my first time too eeeek. im getting a whv so always have the option to earn while im there. im statring in sydney for a few week as i have an uncle thats lives there, i have a few friends that are there now and hostels are very cheap. im planning to go north after sydney to try and see evrything possible lol. ayers rock is a def. buses in perth are not meant to be great but a camper with other people would be a fab idea.

Both plans do sound pretty good. I live in Australia (Perth) so i'm hoping I can help you out a bit.
If you can stay for as long as you want I wouldnt want to just stick to the east coast of Australia. The west coast has so much more to see as well.
You can hire campervans, I tend to see alot of *Wikid Campers* around Perth and up north on the west coast. http://www.wickedcampers.com.au/
Not sure if you have heard or not but currently there are massive floods happening around Brisbane in QLD. Hopefully things would have settled down by the end of the year but i'd want to keep an ear out to see how there rebuilding efforts are going to see if its worth heading up.
If I was doing the trip in a camper van from Melbourne or Sydney i'd then head west to Adelaide and then across the Nullarbor. Once across head south to Esperance and start from there and make your way North up along the coast. There are some amazing towns and sights to see as you make your way north (Wineries, Beaches, Forests etc)
While in Perth I'd go over to Rottnest for a day or 2, go find a nice cemetary there you will find lots of Kangaroo's, go to Scarborough beach for a swim then head to the Scarborough beach hotel for a fun Sunday session.
After playing around in Perth for a while keep heading north up to Lancelin where there are massive sand dunes and beaches you can drive on. From Lancelin there has just been a road put through that sticks to the coast and heads upto Jurien Bay and Geraldton.
I havnt been to Geraldton to many times but after that keep heading north to where you will reach Kalbarii which is a nice beach town. From Kalbarii keep heading north and head out west more where you will reach Denham (Furtherest town on the West Coast of Australia) A quick 1 hour from Denham is Monkey Mia, here you are able to see the Dolphins at 7am every monring being fed.
From there you can keep heading north upto places like Coral Bay (Awesome Snorkeling), Carnarvon, Exmouth, Port Hedland (not much here), Karratha (Also not much here) then Broome and Darwin.
Once you have experienced enough of the north side of Australia on your way back down you can stop by Ayers Rock.
Hopefully that will help you out a bit. Sorry most of it is about the West Coast its where I live and have grown up :D

I am heading to Sydney in May. My plan was to travel North to Brisbane and Cairns but not sure is thats going to be the best idea... I probably won't decide until I get there for sure, but this is great advise Thanks!
Hello JennyRose0 and nicky88 its really good to see people travelling to Oz at the end of the year! I'm travelling to Oz Oct '11 and plan on starting in Melbourne and will be on a WHV. Apart from the Visa and the flights I dont think i'll preplan anything else!
JennyRose0- i've planned pretty much everything through STA travel they've been so helpful, any queries i've had i've just emailed them andf they've put my mind at ease, they're all well travelled themselves so good at advice!
goldy500- thats good advice, an alternative to the popular east coast trip!

Remember that December - April is referred to as the wet season in northern Australia which is kind of north of Brisbane and so heavy rain, humidity and flooding is quite common. This year as goldy500 said there has been heavy flooding around Brisbane and Rockhampton and while the flooding isn't usually this bad if it happens it happens during the wet season.
Because you're arriving in December or January I'd hang around south of Brisbane for a couple of months and head north after march, goldy500's trip sounds good, there's heaps to see around Esperance and Perth, north of Perth up to Broome is fairly remote so I'd recommend travelling with other people and outside the wet season.

Thanks for all the advice, it was nice to here about the west coast and things to do there aswell i had heard about the floods so maybe it will be best not to head that way!!
