New york is more expensive or as expensive than the UK if your talking about Manhattan.
If your in Florida its a shame to miss Disneyworld i went as a kid and am defianetly going back this year ( i will be 25), its not like any place youve been before

we are after the real toruisty sort of stuff but would also like to go to some places that arent really on the tourist map and see what "real america is all about in the suburbs??
Would love to help but till i start in Feb 2011 i will have only done the tourist stuff and only in new york, im setting out on a year long road trip across america in 5 weeks cant wait!
I'd put Blue Springs Fl, north of Orlando and my list, as well as,
Savannah GA
Charleston SC
Nags Head NC
Williamsburg VA
from there you could head inland to DC then on up on I95 to NYC. This gives you a pretty direct coastal route north. Also consider going further north. Boston and Maine are fantastic at that time of year.
I've done Florida to N.Y. by road.
First recommendation I would give , in contrast to what's already been said....
avoid Disney. It's expensive, the rides are tamer than a child's fun-fair, the food is all totally plastic and the whole place is just such a rip-off. Nothing personal - Disney, it's just that I couldn't see the attraction within the attraction.
Don't spend too much time in Miami - either. A very unsafe city at night, if you're unaccompanied at don't know where youre going.
Those two things apart, it's a lovely trip.
Don't miss Key West and Lake Okeecehobee. I have relatives in Florida that I stay with now and then - and even they had never been to the Lake. it's huge and has some very nice parking spots. The immense amount of wildlife on the water is wonderful.
Charleston - West Virginia has some very old bits (by USA standards though, not European - so only old in their eyes) and quite a bit of interesting history. it's beaches aren't up to much though.
In NYC itself, make sure you plan your parking well ahead. It's a nightmare.

Isn't that the South Carolina Charleston you mean?
Anyway, do you want to end in NY or end with sun in Florida? I would do it reserve to be honest. This only means one thing: if you rent a car in NY, the average price is higher than in Florida (Florida is the cheapest state to rent a car in the USA).
But in that case: do NY and take a train to Washington, D.C. to visit that city as well and start renting the car from there or any neighbouring city/place.
Apart from Charleston, SC and Savannah, I believe St. Augustine in Florida is a place with relatively old buildings and history.
I think the Smoky Mountains and/or Blue Ridge Parkway are not recommended in winter, but maybe people who actually drove that part in winter might now better.
For something different, try in Homosassa or Chrystal River.
Everglades comes to mind as well.

beach at that, with some smelly factories close-by too.
It's the Charleston in WV that I'm on about - with the interesting 'Old' bits.

In my mental map Charleston, SC is also the one with the history and stuff. Charleston, WV has a Capitol building though, but can't find any more info on that.
