I am scared of spiders, do you see many about in the accomodation or just out and about??
I don't recall seeing any spiders in any of the accommodation I stayed in (during 3 months in SE Asia) but I did see some big ones out and about in trees etc.
Although they don't "infest" buildings, the is quite common around Asia. As you can see, they are actually harmless, unless you are another bug!
Because they aren't web builders, they wander around hunting their prey. This is why they appear from time to time.
As far as I know, there aren't any poisonous spiders, here in China, or in Korea or Japan. If you go out into the rural areas of northern China, you will see a lot of very colourful, but harmless, spiders. You'll rarely see them inside though.
Oops! Just 'googled' it: there ARE poisonous spiders in China- a kind of black widow spider, among others. But I haven't seen any, in the 7+ years I've lived here.
Most of the spiders I have seen have been mounted under glass.
You will find huge cockroaches and little cockroaches in some places. Little teeny - weenee ants around faucets is not unusual.
You will see bugs sold as food by street vendors too.
I don't think you have to worry about spiders too much. You will probably catch your toe on a crack in the sidewalk or trip over some piece of junk sticking up from a sidewalk first.
Basically, the places to where you will spend your stay will actually keep the accommodation in shape and comfortable enough to your preference. It would also help a lot to give them a heads up to have the room spider free and that you are afraid of them.
Cheers
Oh thanks makes me feel better xxx
I have seen a couple of big spiders out in the sticks, but nothing scarier than your common-or-garden house spider in any hostel I think.
I didnt see any out and about but we found a huge one on the ceiling of the bathroom in our place on the gili islands in Indonesia. We asked the owner about it and he said it wasnt poisonous or anything.
Anyway we went out for dinner and a few drinks and when we came back it was gone...we did a little checking around the bed and that but it all worked out in the end and that was my only spider incident in about 7 months in S.E. Asia.
