I am 19 and about to enter Australia with a working visa as the second leg of my travels... I originally had plans of fruit picking for my first 3 months and then hopefully find some bar work somewhere and settle... However, I have been told mining is a great way to earn quite a bit of money... I am clueless to this idea and would like some guidance or answers.. Is it possible to do without a trade under my belt?(although I do have labouring experience) is it reasonable to expect a good wage? Is it possible to do without signing a contract? And if not how long do these jobs last? And does it count in the same way as harvest work to a second year visa?

Not sure how easy it would be, I know people here who have worked in the mines, but it can take a bit to actually get the job. If you can though, the money is incredible.

Was speaking to my friend in Perth recently who has met a few lads from the UK who have managed to land jobs in the mines in the surrounding areas. It's a case of sitting in the right pubs speaking to the right people, and approaching the right recruitment agencies in the right towns. So might take a while to land a job, but if and when you do the money is very very good. Be prepared to take a basic health and drugs test. Do a bit of searching on the internet as to where the mines are etc and best of luck mate. I'm in Melbourne but after hearing of all this I'm gearing up for a trip out west!!
To work in the mines it's not what you know, but who you know. It is very hard to land a job in the mines without any experience or qualifications.
I am a geologist in the UK. Most of us head out to Australia or Africa to work because there is nothing to do here...
I'm not sure what sort of job you're expecting to do. They rarely use picks in small tunnels anymore. Where you want to visit also depends on what sort of job opportunities there are and the sort of requirements for the jobs. A good number of the big mines are in central or western Australia a long way from anywhere.
I really don't know how casual labouring works in Australia. I'd contact the big mining and natural resource firms in Australia, names like BHP, Apex and Panoramic spring to mind but there are hundreds of others. See what they have to say.
I will say that positions for geoscience graduates are very competetive, particularly at the present moment. Mines are exceptionally dangerous work environments that employ highly skilled geologists, engineers etc. and they can afford to be picky.
Yes, I was going to say they are in isolated areas. If you're coming to visit Australia and tour it, then working in a mine probably isn't the way to do it, unless you like being in those terrains all the time. There won't be any major cities nearby although there might be national parks, but perhaps not nice green ones.

Don't use Mining Australia, they are a rip off. Don't ever pay a website for information on mines, they just gather free information easily found on the internet. Basically, getting a job in the mines is like finding a needle in a haystack, and that's when you ARE Australian. I don't even want to think of the sort of hoops you'd have to do get a job as a foreigner and unskilled. I wouldn't even try unless you have a lot of money to live on for a bit while you searched, and you'd have to move into the remote locations, which means not being able to get non mining work because the towns are so remote (they fly people in to work in them) and so small, and then if you do land a rental in those locations you pay through the a**!! I'm talking thousands of dollars a week. People led on to how much housing was needed in these locations, so they bought up houses and are now charging massive rates for renting because they mines lack housing and get paid so much.
