China and Japan

Hi All

Your train journeys are going to be quite long. You could probably get an inexpensive domestic flight from Shanghai to Xian, or Xian to Beijing, and save a couple of days of travel.

There are some worthwhile daytrip/overnight trips from Shanghai: Suzhou, Hangzhou and Nanjing especially. For Shanghai itself, I would recommend no more than 2-3 days.

For Beijing: at least 3 days (including 1 day to see the Great Wall). You might be able to get really cheap accommodation, if you haggle well, but remember that BJ is a huge city, and if you save money by getting accommodation far from the city center, you'll just spend what you've saved on taxis getting downtown. When I visit BJ (about once a year) I usually spend 240-280 yuan ($35-$40) at one of the small hotels just west of Wangfujing Street, which is walking distance to shopping, restaurants and the subway and not far from the Forbidden City. It's worth it.

In Xian, aside from the Terracotta Warriors and the old city wall, there's not much to see. I'd suggest 2 days. Accommodation and food are much cheaper there than either Shanghai or Beijing. This part of China is known for it's noodles, which are cheap, delicious, and very filling. Try the small noodle restaurants- they're cheaper and just as good as the large restaurants.

Tokyo is a wonderful and famous city of Japan. I really like Asakusa, Shinjuku, Shibuya and Harajuku in Tokyo. I think the best way to travel around Tokyo in a short span of 3-4 days is to hire a guide. He will help you to best utilize your time and to explore the city in a much better way.

Hi , I'm an office worker in Tokyo !!

Have you already decided when you will visit Tokyo ?
I think if you come to Tokyo in spring , you had better enjoy Cherry blossoms Festival.
