Best (most comprehensive) backpacking insurance

It helps with queries like this to specify where you're from, so people don't have to click through to your profile to see that. There's a few global insurance providers, but most are very much bound by borders, and so I for example have no idea about the situation in the UK, and thus can't give you any recommendations...

Good point Sander. I'm from the UK.

There's quite a few things to look for in travel insurance. Sometimes some things matter more than others. Like car rental excess coverage is very useful if you are going to be using rental cars. If not, there's really no need to take this into consideration. Other things include

  • pre-existing medical conditions (asthma has been an issue for us in the past in choosing insurance)
  • activity coverage
  • baggage coverage (depends how much valuable stuff you have whether this matters!)

So the simple answer is that there is no best insurance for every type of backpacker.

That said, from a brief bit of research it seems that Virgin Money has a very comprehensive offering which might be worth looking at (not cheap). Otherwise, just do a search for "travel insurance comparison" and you should be able to find a site that helps with comparing the options.

I'm not familiar with UK policies, and as previously mentioned, what you need may not apply to what I might need. In any case, I'm currently using world nomads and know several others that are as well. It might be worth a look.

I find consumer website moneysavingexpert.com a good starting point for uk travel insurance.
