I've only been to Seoul which was very easy with a good Metro to get around (and a stored value card system made it easier still). The palaces were largely fascades so didn't take long. Packed with weird interesting stuff - such as a Hello Kitty cafe.
We wanted to get to the demilitarized zone but our only chance was on a Monday when they're closed, which we found amusing - "most dangerous spot on earth", closed on mondays.
I wish I'd had time to get out to this .
Did this a couple of years ago for three weeks. Landed at Narita airport, Tokyo and went to Hakone and Mt Fuji, Kyoto, Hiroshima and then Shimonoseki for the ferry across to Busan, up to Seoul and the DMZ, out to Sokcho and then back to Seoul and flew out from Incheon.
Can't add too much more at the moment; just woke up at Caye Caulker, Belize.

I'm trying to start planning a trip to Japan and SOuth Korea, but struggling to know where to start.
Has anyone got any suggestions of cities/landmarks to visit, best transport options, how long one would need etc.?

I was at the Korean Folk Village, Gyeonggi, South Korea not too far from Seoul ( google maps says it can be done in 1hour 36 minutes ) & found it a charming place to visit. The wedding re-enactment was extremely good. Pre-view the website so you know what time the various activities are on. Apart from the wedding, there is dancing, Tight-rope walking, Archery, a steel forge & lots of food. Hot roasted chestnuts -- MMmmmm!

Osaka and Kyoto in Japan were both great as I like castles. My Blogo =
But the Torii gate at the Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima island was a highlight. It's a ferry ride from near Hiroshima & I'd wish I had a few days to spare for the island as there appears to be a lot more than just the famous shrine. The tide was out when I saw the Gate but it still looked wonderful.
