I'm brand new to travelling and would like to start by hiking across Europe starting the first week of January. I plan to start in France and reach as many countries as possible volunteering on the way and giving myself the challenge of not using any planes as I go. If anyone would like to join me for either a single country or the entire trip, shoot me a PM and we'll organise something Regardless any advice in general is greatly appreciated!
January and February can be pretty grim weather in northern Europe, plenty of snow or rain, so you may want to think about southern France and Mediterranean Europe for the first part of your travels.
Have a good trip. Do you have any specific objectives or just want to soak it all up?
Seconding Andyf ' s comment: Jan and Feb can be quite cold, it may be worth looking to start further south / in the mediterranean. Do you have a timeline in mind?

Ok, i did forget to take the cold under advisement. "Small" detail... Backpacking this time of year does sound pretty cold. Maybe I'll rethink that idea and go on a shopping spree in Europe's Capitals instead ))
Im currently backpacking through northern Europe region - not too cold, but cant camp. We doing couchsurfing and workaways, then transportation via bus (so long) and train.
