Me, my girlfriend and a friend are going on a RTW year long trip starting on the 10th Oct 2010, and yes, our flight is scheduled to leave at 10pm, which is beyond crazy!
i havent got much i can add to this to be honest,just thought it was funny when seeing you departing dates lol
i leave in november and will be in oz from the 27th decemeber for 4 months,starting in sydney for new year, then like you waiting for a mate to fly out in feb so we can travel down the east coast, i have also been thinking about taking a note book with me,iv been told most hostels have wi-fi,but mines just for personal use,keeping in touch etc but wasnt sure if it was a good idea to take one!
Just confirming dates, you'll be arriving in Perth on the 18th October, staying in WA for 2 1/2 months until Christmas and then flying to Sydney on boxing day, staying there for 2 months and then doing a 1 month trip up the east coast staying a total of 5 1/2 months in Australia?
I'd be looking at travelling a lot more than just Perth, Sydney and the top half of the east coast. If it's an option I personally would probably buy some form of transportation in Perth and make my way to Sydney aiming to arrive by mid December, leave your transport in long term parking (or sell it) and fly back to Perth for Christmas. Fly back to Sydney and do the attractions and then if you want to work to make some money do that for 2 months. If you don't then head south - it's summer in January/February and you'll get warm weather and the beach, make your way back to Sydney in time to meet your friend and travel up the East coast.
If you're keen to stay put in WA, the south coast will be awesome in December, check out the beaches around Bunbury, the trees in Denmark and more beaches around Esperance. I've got some pictures in my gallery.
Finding short term IT work might be tricky especially in a specified field, you might have to take whatever you can get. You could possibly pick up some casual IT support work, are you going to have a WHV?
Ah, sorry. I was tired and/or working when I wrote this.
We are in Australia for a total of 11 months, so the top of the east coast isn't the end for us, we will probably go on to Darwin from Cairns, through the middle via Alice Springs and Uluru, out of the bottom to Adelaide and then on to Melbourne, finally leaving from Sydney where we fly to LA meeting the same friend that will have come over in March and then onto Vegas to meet family who will be flying out again, finally hitting San Francisco (very excited about this) and then home

I keep having mixed emotions about whether I'm excited or soiling myself at the prospect of being alone and so far away from everything I've ever known :/
Actually, just thinking about it, I'm starting to get worried about money and the cost of living etc. Maybe I will start appreciating the low rates my parents charge when I get ou there? :P
So I think I will have between £4k - £5k to go out there with, the people I'm travelling with, probably £3k..
That equates to roughly $7425AUD..
We will need accomodation every night, so lets just assume that we spend £40UK a day..
Just done the math..
Apparently I'm good for about 112 days, what am I worrying for, I'm sure I can get a job by then :P
Another question is renting a place? Is there such thing as a rolling monthly contract? Or is it all 6 months, 12 months, longer?
I was thinking of maybe towards the end just renting a place, the three of us and choosing say our favourite place..
I dunno :P

11 months is heaps of time, you can check out the south coast of WA while you're in Perth, the beaches are awesome and you could head down the Margaret River wine region. You might also want to visit Rottnest Island but it will probably be quite busy at that time of year.
The rest of your trip sounds great, how were you going to travel?

I think I saw Rottnest Island (who the hell named it that :S) on the Itinerary when my Family fly over at Christmas. My sister said something about biking round it? Or through it?
We arent sure yet. We already have the flights booked on Boxing Day for Sydney, so from there we either pick up a car between us, or use the Greyhound..
Have you done it? What would you recommend?
Yep biking around the island is quite popular, as far as I could tell the only other vehicles on the road are a bus and national parks vehicles and it's all fairly level.
Fortunately for me I just used my 4x4 to travel and haven't tried greyhound or tried hiring.
As the date draws ever closer I keep thinking of new things to be worried about.
My latest thing is spiders. Just how often do you hear someone say, 'I opened a cupboard and a red back jumped out and landed in my mouth'..
I'm over thinking it a little too much I know I am.
Redbacks tend to like to hide outside in cool dark areas like cracks in brickwork, they aren't that common and try to run away rather than jump on you. Funnel webs are more interesting, they hide under rotting wood or in holes and are more aggressive and will tend to rear up but won't bite unless provoked. Again they aren't very common.
Most likely you'll mostly see harmless spiders. You might find the occasional wolf spider or huntsman inside but they don't make webs they're just as scared of you as you are of them and they'll run away. The worst ones are orb weaving spiders when you walk straight into their webs - they scare the life out of you! As far as I know they aren't poisonous but I've never been bitten
