Hello!
'Must do' places will often be those most frequented by tourists but in thread you said you were looking for 'hidden must dos' and 'no major tourist activities'. So can you clarify what kind of things you are hoping to see and do?
I'm open to anything! Something exciting, once in a life time, something you can only do in Indonesia, etc.
Have you been there before? What are the things I would regret not doing? Doesn't have to be a major attraction.
Yes, I was in Indonesia in November and loved it. In Java, the must-sees in my opinion are Borobudur and Mt Bromo-get up early at Mt Bromo to see the sunrise. Yogyakarta has quite a cool vibe and is a much nicer city than Jakarta. Bali is beautiful - snorkelling off the coast of Lovina is really good, and Ubud is well worth a few days. It's a really nice, arty town so it's a great place to hang out for a while, and there are a few things to see in the surrounding areas. For something typically Indonesian go and see a Javanese or Balinsese dance or ballet, such as the Ramayana.
Must do??
Eat "nasi goreng"... that is fried rice and it is really nice...
Try "sate"... beef or lamb or chicken on skewers.... nice too...
thanks for the tips!
If you are in Yogyakarta for Borobudur and Prambanan, dont miss AYAM GORENG SUHARTI. The best in town.
Thanks for the tips!!!
How long do you think I need to see most of the country?
Hi mm143,
Without a doubt you would need years to see most of the country of Indonesia. I have made 9 trips in 12 years and spent a whole 5.5 months there in 2006 travelling from Lombok to Bali through all Java, Sumatra - 3.5 months and 18 days in Aceh and 6 days in South Sulawesi and Tana Toraja and I still have not seen that much at all.
Indonesia NEEDS to be taken slowly and savoured. The Indonesian people are just wonderful and they are the reason I continually return again and again.
You are more than welcome as is anyone else reading this post to send me a private message for detailed information and copies of maps to help you with your planning.
Here is an excellent report from a young traveller whom I helped with detailed information for his trip.
He spent about a month in Sumatra and wrote this incredibly detailed report which is such a helpful resource for future travellers. Please note that prices quoted may have changed as it is 12 months since he did the trip.
