I understand the predicament and have been in this situation a few times but the last time about 3 years ago I did something that worked for me, there are a couple of main programes that people register for as a host and you can stay at their place and help with farming or renovating a house or they might be setting up a new business, starting out in organic farming etc.. normally you work for a few hours a day and receive food and board and when you are bored at one place you find the next one at a different village/different country etc.. you can learn a bit of the language see some alternative lifestyles etc.. (the programes are called HELPX, the other is WOOF)
