hey, im planning a trip to thailand driving on the trans siberien highway has anyone done this and have any advise? thanks alex
Hi Alex,
I am not sure you will get many comments from fellow travellers as it's a relatively unknown territory for most of us. But still, you may have some luck...
I know that some people did your route.
In any case, I would look at relevant regional section of horizonsunlimited and crazyguyonabike websites - they may provide you with some useful infos.
Also, try to google overland expeditions, etc along this route and contact the owner of the website.
I have done a bit research on this route - and it seems that biggest challenges will be:
- Carnet douanier (custom paper) / security deposit - in case you don't return the car to the home country, you may loose the deposit (which can be thousands of euros) - so shipping will be another headache. I am also not sure how easy/difficult it is take your car into China.
- Permit/driving licence for china: foreigner nationals are not allowed to drive in china, unless they obtain a special driving licence. There are agents who may help you in this. I know one in Beijing. But it is still very tricky and i am not sure you will be able to arrange that from outside of china. Also, you may need a different visa than tourist. Same agents can help you get business visa for a hefty fee.
- Visa: Russia, China - might be a bit complicated but possible
- Bad roads especially in the far east of Russia and Mongolia
- Carrying/supply extra parts for your car, you will probably need a good set of spare tires
Good luck on your journey - hope you will succeed!
Alex,
I have no knowledge about this route, but met a couple who may have. Simon & Lisa have been on the road for 8 years. They are riding . Take a look at their route, read their blog about Russia and you might get your answer. You can contact them and ask questions about your plans. Good luck with your planning.
