Working in New Zealand for people OVER 30!!

Hi

If you have a skill that is in demand you may be able to apply for a work permit once you get there, on the basis of having a job offer. Lots of people apply for jobs on a tourist visa with a view to getting a work permit - just don't advertise this to immigration when you arrive.

Have a look at the to get an idea of what kinds of things are in demand or on the shortage list. NZ is just coming out of recession though so the job market isn't exactly booming but it is getting better; also immigration have become stricter about issuing work permits to non - NZ residents since the recession.

There is always the option of casual work such as fruit - picking, but obviously this is risky and is poorly paid.

Thanks Bex76. It is more casual work that we are after, rather than a full-time job.

Have you done fruit picking?

Debs

Hi Debs,

No, I haven't done fruit picking myself but have a couple of friends who did it. It sounds like it could be a fun way to see the country. is quite a useful resource for jobs, short-term accommodation, cars for sale etc.

I shared a house with 2 girls who were on tourist visas and picked up casual, cash in hand work in cafes and restaurants, and at one point had a job helping out a painter and decorator, so there's all sorts of things you could potentially pick up. Do you know when you are arriving? The rugby world cup is in NZ later this year so could create some short-term jobs.

Hi Thanks for your reply and the link - its really useful.

Thanks also for the info re the 2 girls who had casual work with a tourist visa, that's what I was hoping!

We are currently running a hostel in Pucon, Chile and may have work lined up for the summer here, so probably looking to arrive in NZ end of Feb 2012. I've had a look at the link you sent me and it looks like there is work we can do picking & pruning - perfect.

Thanks again
Debs
