Getting started to tavel and work abroad indefinately

Help, i have wanderlust and need help getting going, i am recently separated from my wife and now find i have the freedom and oppertunity to travel the 4 corners of the globe and getting started is a little difficult

The grass is always greener.....

There are employment problems the world over and unless you have some special skill, you'll stand as little chance of getting a job as any immigrant from a third world country. Such jobs are usually hard manual labour for little money.

Go visit a place you fancy on holiday and then see what work opportunities there are, remembering a holiday is not the same as living there. One guy I read about moved to Australia for sunshine and now finds he has his air conditioning on 365 days a year.

Cheers Fankill that sounds like spontaneity is the way for you, maybe planning only drags things out

Actually Cyberia is being quite honest about things. Travellerspoint sees a great number of threads wanting to know about traveling and employment. In the six years I have been a member, the most successful employment opportunities have been as a (certified) TEFL instructor or a migrant farm worker. In some areas you may find 'under-the-table' work in restaurants and bars/pubs.

If do have a specialized skill- website design, brewmaster, archeologist, etc. - then you may find employment but there will be certain governmental requirements which need to be followed depending on the country. This is only an example, but you can not legally work in the US without having a job waiting for you. The company has to provide certain paperwork as will you. Otherwise, you will be working 'under-the-table' or as a migrant worker somewhere.

Cyberia is also correct in visiting your intended relocation destination(s) before actually relocating to any particular place. If you want to see all four corners of the globe, then a TEFL certificate will be a handy thing to have in hand. It will allow you to take on short-term employment. More often than not, someone decides this place or that is where they want to be, they move there, maybe find decent employment and then realize 'Utopia' isn't really 'Utopia'. They either return home or move on in hopes of finding gainful employment in 'Utopia #2'.

So, the things our members really would like to know so they can answer your request effectively:

  • Do you have a specialized skill?
  • Do you have a particular part of the where you'd like to start/see?
  • Do you have a travel fund or starting with $0.00?

Last, but not least - you state you have just separated from your wife. You will have to take into consideration your timing if you choose to divorce (court dates, etc.) and any settlements involved, which may play into your budgeting.

I don't mean to be a 'fankill' either, but making a complete life change does take a bit of forethought and planning. Currently, with the info you have provided, only you know what capabilities, skills, finances and destinations you have in mind.
