You'll find heaps of lone travellers in South America. Don't worry about that!
I also took language classes before going to South America and it made me realize how big an undertaking learning another language is, but just having a few basic words and phrases really helped a lot. Numbers especially. It was also fun just to do just as a build up to the trip and get into the right frame of mind.
South America is a great place to travel. Hope you have fun!

Thanks for your reply, much appreciated! Yeah I was thinking even by having just a few basic phrases would help, so now im definately going to take on a course some point soon. Glad to hear there are lots of other lone travelers aswell. Its just going to be so diiferent doing it on my own as my last trip I went with my best friend so there was always each other to keep us company, but im looking at this as an exciting challenge now!

I'm planning on travelling around Oz by myself and know how you feel. I was initially really nervous, but, after reading peoples comments on travel forums like this one, I feel sooo much better about the whole thing. There seems to be loads of people doing the same thing and everyone says it's impossible not to make friends once you're out there.
I travelled around Central America a couple of years ago with a friend, so wasn't by myself, but met loads of people who were and they seemed absolutely fine! A lot of people were also heading down to South America, by themselves - so i'm sure you will be absolutely fine!
Taking a Spanish course is a really good idea. I have a friend who spent 6 months in Costa Rica recently, and like you took a Spanish course before hand, she said it made such a difference.
I'm arriving in Oz mid October, starting in Cairnes. Also got a working holiday visa. What about you?
