safe Japan?

Hi,
my girlfriend and I have booked a trip through Japan, but now we're worried that due to the nuclear disaster, it might be unsafe/unhealthy to go. We're unsure whether the Tokyo area is "clear" and so on. I'm not sure I can trust the information provided by the Japanese government and so I'd like to know if you guys know some places/media/people who can give some advice on whether to go or not ....

Here's a (British) government site with updated travel information for Japan:
http://www.fco.gov.uk/en/travel-and-living-abroad/travel-advice-by-country/asia-oceania/japan

A friend of mine is in Japan since February, near Osaka, without too many troubles. The travel advice is generally more negative for the north eastern part. I guess it depends on your further travel plans, if you want to stay in the region near Tokyo, and how much risk you want to take.

Also from travel.state.gov. The US travel alter reads:

"The assessment of technical and subject matter experts across United States Government agencies is that while the situation at the Fukushima Daiichi plant remains serious and dynamic, the health and safety risks to areas beyond the 50 mile evacuation zone, and particularly to Tokyo, Nagoya (Aichi Prefecture), Yokohama (Kanagawa Prefecture) nearby U.S. military facilities and the prefectures of Akita, Aomori, Chiba, Gunma, Iwate, Nagano, Niigata, Saitama, Shizuoka, Tochigi, and Yamanashi, and those portions of Fukushima, Ibaraki, Miyagi and Yamagata prefectures which are outside a 50 mile radius of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant are low and do not pose significant risks to U.S. citizens."

Also, "We continue to recommend that U.S. citizens avoid travel within the 50-mile radius of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant." So my best is if you are traveling southwest and around Tokyo, most everything is stable for tourism.

I was at the Nagoya airport 2 weeks ago and so far no "glow in the dark" when I shut the lights off! There have been millions of tourists who have safely passed through Tokyo airports since the Tsunami and nuclear power station problem. I will be passing through Narita airport tomorrow and I don't expect any problems!

There have been pilots and crews who have passed through Narita many times. If they thought their lives were in danger we would all know by now!

Have a nice trip.

Japan is very safe to go to . We were in Japan when the earth quake happened and only the area north of Tokyo has been affected. Places like Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Fukuoka , Kobe and especially Kyoto are not affected. It is a great time to go to Japan as some of the places like Kyoto are not busy like they normally are. Would recommend anyone thinking of going to Japan to go. There are some great airfares available now !!!
